Random Parma Video 11: Cup Winner’s Cup 92/93

The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup (in Italian, Coppa delle Coppe) was a cup that included all the national cup winners of each European nation and put them in a competition. In 92/93, after winning the Coppa Italia the previous season, Parma entered their first ever European competition, and won their first ever European trophy. The final was at Wembley Stadium in May of 1993 vs. Royal Antwerp of Belgium (when’s the next time we’ll see them in a European cup final?) and Parma won 3-1 with goals from Lorenzo Minotti, Sandro Melli, and Stefano Cuoghi. Here are the highlights:

Franc’, I just wrote a big article on Royal Antwerp for a Belgian football magazine. They’ve had some rough times (both financial and sportive), but they’re trying hard to return to the highest level in Belgium. They’re in 5th now, 5 points behind the leaders in the 2nd division.

Parma had a Belgian in the final as well: Georges GrĂ¼nn. And the Antwerp-player who scored, Cisse Severeyns, had a little spell at Pisa too.

thanks for the info Steven. I think Belgian football overall these days is under the radar. I remember when we used to see Club Brugge and Anderlecht in the Champions League.

As I’m also working on an article about past legends that are now playing in the lower leagues, I’ve been spending lots of time looking at the European competitions since the 50’s. Hell, Anderlecht and Brugge used to be two of the best teams in the world, while even Standard and RFC Liege would often appear in the last 8 of a european competition.

Now look what we have…Anderlecht getting a 0-5 asswhooping by Bayern.
