Random Parma Video 10: One of the Greatest Comebacks of All Time

By: Francesco | February 21st, 2008

After watching Inter fail miserably in England this week, they have to put in a masterful performance at the San Siro and score 3 goals without conceding any to go through to the next round. So with the theme being set as “Great Comebacks”, we shift to the Parma side of things. In the 1995/96 season, Parma were in the UEFA Cup as defending champions, and really looked set for elimination after losing 3-0 away to Swedish side Halmstad (led by a young Freddy Ljungberg, who makes a cameo appearance late in the video). Parma went back to the Tardini in despair, as they needed a 4-0 victory at home to qualify to the next round. But the Gialloblu’, led by manager Nevio Scala, certainly had the firepower to do it. This was a squad with Gianfranco Zola, Hristo Stoichkov, Dino Baggio, Fabio Cannavaro, Antonio Benarrivo, Luca Bucci, and a young Pippo Inzaghi up front. It’s definitely one of Parma’s greatest games of all time, the Gialloblu’ scored 4 goals, and Bucci made sure none were let in, to qualify for the next round.

Everyone should enjoy this video because:

1) Just look at Parma’s starting XI in the beginning of the video, what a great squad we had. What a difference from today. The 1990s were great.

2) Pippo Inzaghi scores a goal from outside the box. Yes, you are reading right, this is no illusion. The ultimate goal poacher, SuperPippo Inzaghi, scores a goal from outside the box. Just in case you still do not believe me, it’s true, Filippo Inzaghi scores a goal from outside the box. And for further proof, watch the video.

3) There is loads of great attacking football and action, as Parma had to go for broke and attack from kick-off.

Here’s the video, and just to remind you, Pippo Inzaghi scores from outside the box:

Now if Inter want to beat Liverpool, they should learn from Parma.

Avanti Crociati!

Kari, it’s going to take years before Parma gets back to that level. The Ghirardi era has just started, and it looks like he has a serious project to get back to that level in a couple of years.

Not only did he score outside the box, he did it with his left foot too! Great game.

Francesco, I’m glad to hear that considering Parma were one of the big teams in Serie A back in 1990s.But now they have to fight for relegation every season.

Just as well SuperPippo did score outside the box. He missed some cracking opportunities inside the box the entire rest of game :)
