Parma-Juve, Like a Derby

As central defender Massimo Paci said today in a press conference, walking around the city of Parma you get the atmosphere of a derby. Parma-Juventus has always been a derby like encounter, as both sides have provided such great games throughout the years. This “derby” was at it’s high point in the 90’s when Parma beat Juventus to win the 1995 UEFA Cup. After the jump we’ll go through some stats.

A young Buffon at Parma

Probably the only Juventus player who will be applauded at the Tardini on Sunday will be the man in the picture, Gianluigi Buffon. After starring for Parma from 1995-2001, he went on to Juventus for a record setting fee for a goalkeeper. Although he was born in Tuscany, he was brought through the Parma youth system and made his debut as a 17 year old. He is still loved by the Gialloblu’ fans.

The only other ex-Parma player on the roster is winger Marco Marchionni. As you all know in the past they had Fabio Cannavaro and Lillian Thuram, two ex-Parma players.

Of course you also know that Claudio Ranieri coached Parma for the second half of last season, guiding the Gialloblu’ to a miraculous salvation.

And how about this little fun fact. In the mid 90’s, Juventus wanted to sell Dino Baggio to Parma. Baggio refused, and Juventus then were all ready to sell a young Alessandro Del Piero to the Gialloblu’. At the last minute, Baggio had a change of heart and accepted the transfer, and therefore Del Piero stayed at Juve and became a Juventus legend.

Of course last season there were no Parma-Juve encounters, so this will be the first one since 2006. We haven’t beaten Juventus since 2002, but Parma will give Juve a good fight.

This should be an interesting encounter. Avanti Crociati!

I have a feeling it will be a similar scoreline as well Sirius.

I think we will fight hard but Juve will have that extra quality that will get them the win.

Forza Gialloblu! Hopefully my Hail Mary’s will be heard and we’ll get a Parma win and a Napoli win. Love the videos, Francesco. Nice touch. Too bad ADP didn’t get to Parma…maybe I wouldn’t hate him so much if he didn’t play for Juve.

As much as I’m apathetic towards Del Piero, if he had come to Parma, a Del Piero-Crespo forward line would’ve definitely won us a Scudetto or two.

We DESERVED this win :( Why do we always lose the three points in the end of the game… Last 3 games could have brought us 9 pts and we deserved them…

Because you don’t pay the refs as much as Juve does.

Oh cmon…if anyone got let off by the refs in this game it was Parma. I respect you guys for being a decent team (Thanks for Ranieri, he’s doing great for us!) but you guys got lucky with a disallowed goal on Iaquinta for no reason whatsoever.
