Parma-Empoli, an Azzurrini Get Together.

Parma-Empoli

When Parma and Empoli take the field on Sunday, there will be many present and former Italian U-21 Internationals on the pitch: Daniele Dessena and Luca Cigarini for Parma, but Marco Rossi is injured, and Claudio Marchisio, Sebastian Giovinco, Nicola Pozzi, Lino Marzoratti for Empoli. There are also former U21 starlets, like Empoli’s Ighli Vannucchi and Andrea Raggi, along with Parma’s Paolo Castellini and Andrea Gasbarroni. It’s always nice to see two teams with young Italian talents, and Sunday we will see how it turns out, more on the game after il gran salto.

The big pre-game news is that Alberto Malesani , Parma’s coach from 1998-2001 and who is famous for his outbursts (see link), and running on the field like a madman when his team scores, is back at the Tardini, but as coach of Empoli, after they fired a puzzled Gigi Cagni during the week. Both these sides want to be higher up in the Serie A table, and this may be Mimmo Di Carlo’s last game in charge. If Di Carlo doesn’t get a result at home to Empoli, he’s as good as gone, and will be sent packing by Tommaso Ghirardi.

The player I’m most worried about on Empoli is Sebastian Giovinco, who was constantly snubbed by Gigi Cagni, and may finally get a starting role under Malesani, who likes to groom young talents. Also in the center of midfield Juventus owned Claudio Marchisio is really shining and will most probably be brought back to Torino this summer.

Last season we faced Empoli to clinch La Salvezza and we beat them 3-1, avoiding relegation and then we had a party. Here are some videos:

I can’t imagine Sebastian Giovinco not getting the start either — there’s no reason at all for Malesani not to throw him out there. At best, the kid puts in a great performance and the gaffer’s a genius. At worst he’s anonymous, which will make him pretty much equal to most of the other starters anyway.

I don’t know which is better - to lose the game and get di Carlo going, ot to win and to hope that things will get fixed with time…
