Parma-Siena: Another 90th Minute Heartbreak…

Bernardo Corradi celebrates the opening goal with Reginaldo

Parma draw Siena 2-2 with another goal at the death that denied Parma full points. This is a disappointing result because these are the games you have to win if you want to stay in Serie A. The squad needs more concentration as they take the lead but can’t defend them.

More on the game after the jump.

Here are how the teams looked today:

Parma: Pavarini; Coly, Paci, M Rossi, Castellini; Dessena (Matteini 72), Morrone, Cigarini, Reginaldo (Tombesi 84); Gasbarroni (Paponi 79), Corradi

Siena: Eleftheropoulos; Bertotto, Portanova, Loria, Grimi (Bucchi 84); Jarolim, Codrea, Galloppa; Maccarone, Locatelli (Frick 69), De Ceglie

Di Carlo again decided to leave Luca Bucci on the bench in favor of Nicola Pavarini. In the post match comments, Di Carlo stated that “whoever is better physically plays”. Everything else was expected, with Reginaldo and Gasbarroni supporting Corradi up top.

In the early stages De Ceglie almost gave Siena a surprise lead, but Pavarini was attentive and deflected it out for a corner. Morrone had a good chance for the Gialloblu’, but he wasted it and fired straight at Greek goalkeeper Eleftheropoulos.

On 25 minutes Parma took the lead. Gasbarroni fed the ball to Reginaldo on the left, who put in a cross that eluded the Siena defense and reached Corradi, who easily tapped it in. No big celebrations for Corradi since Siena is his hometown team.

However 8 minutes later Siena sprung back. Ex-Udinese and Milan midfielder Tomas Locatelli played a nice through ball for young Juventus-owned left winger Paolo De Ceglie, and he placed a nice angeld drive past Pavarini and into the net. Towards the end of the first half both teams had good chances that weren’t finished.

After the half-time break Reginaldo found Gasbarroni, who dribbled the Siena keeper but shot into the side netting. Later Daniele Dessena had a good chance, but the young talent headed over the bar.

Ten minutes form time, Davide Matteini, who came on for Dessena, appeared to give Parma the win. After a Siena corner kick he took the ball and ran the length of the field, past two Siena defenders and then fired at the Siena net. The first shot was blocked by Eleftheropoulos, but Matteini made sure the second went in.

However, late goals still come back to haunt the Gialloblu’.

In the 90th minute, Roma youth product Daniele Galloppa unleashed a shot from outside the box that would’ve been easily saved by Pavarini. However, the shot took an unlucky deflection off of Marco Rossi that left Pavarini with no chance. Siena stole the 3 points from the Parmigiani and got a share of the spoils.

In the post-match comments Di Carlo said the team needs more concentration in the final minutes to avoid late minute goals. The past two games against Palermo and Siena could have been wins yet they have ended in disappointment. The squad is playing well but lacks experience.

Parma owner Ghirardi (or the Lord of Prosciutto, or the Marshmallow Man, or the Parmigiano Reggiano Enthusiast, etc, etc [Insert Fat Person Joke Here]) said in the post match comments said that Di Carlo’s job is not at risk and he has full faith in him.

However, next up is Parma-Juventus. And it will be a really hard game for the Gialloblu’. Parma used to manhandle Juventus in the 90s, but in recent times the have struggled against them. When Juventus were in Serie B Di Carlo handed them their first defeat when he was in charge of Mantova. Let’s see if he can beat them in Serie A as well. The two teams have already faced off this season, in the last round of Coppa Italia, and Juve came away with a 3-1 victory.

Here are the highlights of that game:

Here are the player ratings of the Parma-Siena match, highlights up when available:

PARMA

Pavarini 6 - not at fault for the goals. He made some good saves and kept Parma in the game.

Paci 5.5 - Conceded too much space to the Siena attack.

Castellini 6 - Fought with determination and aggressiveness against the Siena attacks. Also was good going forward.

Coly 6 - Fought like a lion until the final whistle.

Tombesi s.v. - Only a few minutes for him.

Rossi 5 - Unlucky game for the young Parma defender. Doesn’t do too well and then deflects Galloppa’s shot into the net.

Cigarini 5.5 - Unusually average performance from the young Parma midfielder.

Dessena 6 - Fought hard in midfield until he was subbed off for Matteini with 20 minutes to go.

Gasbarroni 6.5 - Good performance from the winger. Didn’t deserve to be substituted 10 minutes from the end.

Morrone 6 - Lots of running and tackling in midfield.

Corradi 6.5 - Good game from the striker. Scores the first Parma goal and does a lot of hard work.

Matteini 6.5 - Plays for 20 minutes and scores a goal. Beautiful solo effort.

Reginaldo 6 - Good performance, many passes and chances created.

Paponi s.v. - Only a few minutes for the young Primavera striker.

I still don’t agree with Bucci being on the bench. I’m not sold on Pavarini but I’m not sure Bucci would’ve stopped either shot to be fair. At least the draw is better than Roma’s draw at Empoli where Doni simply didn’t concentrate and got too far off his line. This seemed to be the weekend of draws and, to be fair, it isn’t the worse result, but having victory snatched from you on consecutive weeks can be just the type of results that draw you into a relegation battle versus being somewhere in mid table.

    Ah, Juventus week. Fun stuff.
